In 2015, I went into the season with a goal to do a better job connecting with the players and I came up with a robust communication plan. Halfway through the season, I sent out a survey to the team and one of the questions I asked was, “what is one thing the coaching staff is doing well that you would like to see us continue?”. The overwhelming answer was, “communication”. I immediately felt validated that the plan was working.
Later in the survey, I asked the question, “what is one thing you would like to see the coaching staff do more of?”. The overwhelming answer was, again, “communication”.
This was a breakthrough moment for me. It was clear that we were doing good work with our communication and connecting with our athletes, but they were still starving for more. From there I decided to double down on communication and it has since become a pillar of the Curry hockey program.
I’ve learned that in the absence of communication, people will make up their own version of the story and it usually isn’t positive or accurate. Don’t let your players fill the void left by lack of communication with negative thoughts. Fill their proverbial cup with consistent communication.
We have a standard for how we communicate in the Curry hockey program. It is to be direct, honest, and timely. By developing this skill, it helps every individual in our program be more successful in his or her personal and professional life. It is simple and very easy to identify if we are executing or not.
